Southeast and North Carolina Ice Climbing Conditions

February 23rd, 2007

Ice has fallen in NC.

February 5th, 2007

Ice is looking good in high country NC with adequate moisture and good low temperatures.  Picture below is the highway 215 road cut.  Several of the "long" routes are leadable on screws with numerous 10+ cm screws possible.  Some of the steeper lines can take one or two stubbies but these will be questionable protection.  There is plenty of ice to TR.

Ice should be in in many locations. Indicator slabs on I-26 have good solid ice (indicating cold temps--see image below).  The roadcut pictured is usually quite dry compared to other locations, so there should also be plenty of water on the drips nearby in NC.

Please send ice reports and images to climb@granitearches.com
